Clean and maintain your Neoceram window

Order your fireplace insert glass here

The glass of a wood heater naturally blackens during heating. Depending on your frequency of use, your type of wood, the way you light your fire or the quality of your combustion, an insert window is destined to become dirty and tarnish.

It is recommended to clean your Neoceram window regularly, in order to avoid any clogging and the appearance of stubborn stains, but also to enjoy the beauty of the fire.

Adopt a healthy and ecological cleaning method

To provide maximum longevity to your insert window, it is recommended not to use aggressive acid-based products. In fact, they could damage the upper layer of your window, which is treated, and therefore reduce its lifespan.

By damaging this protective layer of your neoceram glass, soot and black smoke particles will bite your glass and become permanently encrusted. You will then be unable to recover its initial state.

The steps for cleaning your insert window

  • If your glass is very dirty, protect your floor from residue by placing newspaper on it, so as not to dirty it.
  • Take a sheet of newspaper and crumple it into a big ball.
  • Dip it in water and soak it with ashes from your fireplace.

Note: Ashes have an excellent abrasive effect, allowing simple and effective cleaning.

Use the ash from the surface of the fireplace and under no circumstances the ash from below (the latter could contain residue that could scratch your glass). Take fine ash, without unburnt material.

  • Rub your window using circular movements and renew your sheet as many times as necessary
  • Finish with a clean cloth or sheet of paper towel to remove dirt and obtain the most transparent window possible.

Our maintenance advice

Having an insert window that is too often obstructed can have many causes:

  • You are burning wood that is too humid: the wood must have a humidity level of less than 20%, which corresponds to a drying period of between 18 and 24 months.

  • Your combustion technique is not good.

  • Your device has too powerful an output compared to the surface you need to heat.

  • Your lighting technique is not good, we recommend the use of the so-called “top down” method: the latter also allows you to obtain better efficiency, better combustion, lower wood consumption and reduce your pollution.

  • Your firewood is not suitable, favor the use of hard woods such as oak, birch or beech and avoid resinous woods (fir, pine, spruce, etc.) which will generate a lot of smoke.

Some windows with self-cleaning properties can also make maintenance easier.

Finally, remember to also check the condition of your seal. If it is no longer waterproof, your window will get dirty more easily. It is recommended to change the seal once a year to ensure optimal sealing for your chimney.
